The Company

The company I am referring to is PrePaid Legal Services, Inc (PPLSI).  This company has been in business for 35 years and is traded on the NYSE since May of 1999.  The ticker symbol for PPLSI is PPD.  The founder, Harland Stonecipher, started the company after he was involved in an auto accident.  Having insurance for health, life and auto covered, Mr. Stonecipher was ill prepared for the lawsuit he was given after being discharged from the hospital.  The person filing the lawsuit was actually ticketed at the scene for being in the wrong. 



Mr. Stonecipher searched across the United States for legal coverage although came up empty handed.  Mr. Stonecipher then went to Europe and found that Europeans have had Legal Plans in place since the early 1900's.  Now, 80% of the European population own a Prepaid Legal Plan.  Mr. Stonecipher brought this model back to the United States and PrePaid Legal Services, Inc. was born in 1972.
